One week till Mexico! I am excited for a much needed break, but I am super nervous leaving the girls behind for six days. I know they will be fine, it’s more Isla and her being exclusively breastfed. We were very blessed with both girls taking a bottle from the very beginning. Isla has a strong bond with me, so that’s what is going to be hard. They will survive, I know! Just have to keep telling myself that every minute.
How am I prepping Isla for six days with no breast? I am pumping like crazy! I have been since the middle of September. I started later because I wanted the freshest milk for while we were gone. My goal since September was to pump 6oz everyday and today I reached my goal of storing the amount I needed! With one week to go I’m quite proud of myself. There is a ton of effort that goes into pumping and storing Breastmilk. You need lots of freezer space! I highly recommend a deep freezer if you plan on storing the milk for over three months. Fridge freezers are manageable but are at a high risk of thawing, and it’s not good for the milk to thaw and freeze again. Buy appropriate storage bags, like Lansinoh. I’ve been using theses bags since I had Lily. Easy to write on, they are BPA free so you can warm the milk in the storage bag. Make sure you write the date because Breastmilk should not stay in the freezer for more than six months. As well as how much you pumped, makes it easier to track the quantity you have in the freezer.
Now breastfeeding does not come easy, some find it hard to pump extra on top of what they feed their child everyday. I’ve found the more you pump the more your body will make. Be patient, eat healthy and stay hydrated. I always eat oats everyday because it’s hypothesized it helps boost milk production. It’s believe the high iron in oats are what help the supply but there has been no proven studies. From personal experience, going back to eating oats everyday has improved my supply within just 4-5 days.
Another tip I have for breast pumping is how much water to drink. Drink your regular amount of daily water, however much you pump. Right afterwards drink triple the amount. So if I just pumped 4oz, I will drink 12oz. I find this helps me stay on top of the extra hydration I need for pumping.
My favourite oats recipe is made with steel cut oats. It’s high in fibre and iron, will help you feel full for longer. I’ve noticed that many people don’t cook them. It’s usually because of their long cooking time. Which I will admit is kind of annoying so I make multiple servings to keep some in the fridge. I make mine on the stove top which takes about 20-25 minutes. You can make larger batches in your crockpot over night if you think that will be easier for your schedule. Steel Cut Oats Go To Recipe
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 20-25 minutes
- 1/2cup Steel Cut Oats
- 2 1/4 cup of Water
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- Pinch of nutmeg
- 1tbsp of Maple Syrup
- 1/4 unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- Bring water to a boil, stir in steel cut oats.
- Bring to a boil again, lower temperature and let simmer uncovered for 20-25 minutes to oats have thickened.
- Remove from heat.
- In a bowl add almond milk, cinnamon, nutmeg and maple syrup.
- Add half the oats, stir.
Delicious oats in no time !
