Healthy Hot Chocolate Recipe

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Who else loves this day? I never really got into it, until I had kids. Now I love to make the most of Valentine’s Day! And nothing is better than celebrating with a warm cup of Hot Chocolate! Sounds yummy right? But you’re probably thinking of how bad it is for you. Well no need to worry, this recipe is healthy and filled with healthy fats!

What makes this recipe healthy? Well I will tell you! It starts with making it from scratch. I know it’s more work than using a package, but using ingredients that are not processed and better for our bodies makes this drink worth while!

For the base I prefer to use unsweetened vanilla almond milk. You can use milk, soy, cashew or any other dairy or non-dairy option. Just be careful not to burn the liquid in the pot while heating. Or your hot chocolate is not going to taste very good. (I’ve done that a few times)

What makes hot chocolate so delicious is the chocolate! I use unsweetened cocoa powder because I always have a canister in the cupboard. But you can use raw powder for better benefits and it’s less processed.

It’s not hot chocolate unless it’s a bit sweet! My main sweetener choice is honey that we buy locally. If I’m low or out of honey, I use maple syrup. Both of these options are great sweeteners because they are natural, and not processed. These sugars can be easily digested. And I think we all know the negative impact to much refined sugar can have on our bodies.

What makes this the best hot chocolate you have ever had, is the addition of coconut oil! Filled with healthy fats, it will keep you full longer. And when you blend this, it creates a thick and creamy hot chocolate. You think it was made with whipping cream!

Honestly so good! This is the only hot chocolate recipe my daughter will drink. Any other recipe from stores or restaurants, she thinks is gross! See the recipe below! Makes me feel like an accomplished mom!

Healthy Hot Chocolate


  • 1 cup Unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tbsp of coconut oil

*** optional: 1/4 tsp of vanilla extract to enhance chocolate flavour ****


  1. Heat almond milk in a pot. BE careful not to over heat and burn the liquid.
  2. Add cocoa powder, honey, coconut oil, and warmed almond milk to a blender.
  3. Blend for 30-60 secs.
  4. Serve!

So easy and delicious! You will be making this everyday this winter!
