Recipe: Traditional Hamburgers

I don’t know about you, but Burgers are the best! And making them yourself just helps boost your confidence in the kitchen. This recipe is near and dear to me. I was originally taught this recipe from my Mom. Summer days spent in the kitchen making burgers together. When I make these, it takes me right back to my childhood. And I can’t wait to pass this recipe down to my girls. Although I will admit, I’ve made a few tweaks in the recipe (sorry Mom!).

Burgers are great because you can make their flavour versatile by switching up the ingredients. The staple ingredient is bread crumbs! You must always use these or trust me. You’ll be eating ground hamburger on a bun. Adding the right amount of bread crumbs, and giving the raw meat time to rest before cooking saves you from adding eggs. Another ingredient to help with binding. But I prefer to let the patties rest for a few hours in the fridge before hitting the grill. The time allows the bread crumb to absorb moisture, to make a thick paste within the patties. Creating its bond.

Other than that, the flavour profile is endless. I prefer to go a smoky flavour by adding BBQ sauce and Montreal steak spice. Few ingredients but great and bold flavour.

Another tip I have is to add a fatty meat in with tour ground beef. My main choice is ground pork, but sausage or minced bacon is another option. You want the fat to help make your burgers juicy! And not dry out while their being grilled.

Traditional Burgers

Ingredients:

  • 600g Extra Lean ground beef
  • 600g Ground Pork
  • 1/3 cup of bread crumb of choice
  • 1 tbsp Montreal steak spice
  • 1/3 cup BBQ sauce of choice

How – To:

  1. Lay out a pan
  2. Combine all ingredients with hands in a large bowl.
  3. Form patty size of choice to fit the buns.
  4. Lay on pan, once all the patties are formed. Cover and rest in fridge for minimum three hours.

When you are ready to grill. Preheat bbq to 425 degrees. Grill 4 minutes each side. Allow burgers to rest for 5 minutes before serving! We want them juicy!

Add your favourite toppings, serve with a delicious summer salad and there you go! Trust me, these are always a huge hit at our summer parties!
